Indoor and Outdoor Trampolines

Whatever happened to trampolines? I remember looking forward to bouncing on the tramp on Saturdays at the YMCA in Springfield, Mass. Not every saturday, but it was one of the activities everyone used to look so forward to. I remember gym class in elementary school and middle school too where trampoline was part of the curriculum. Just a guess, but I think the insurance companies must have gotten involved somewhere along the line especially in the schools. We’d all get around the edges of the trampoline when someone was on them and be spotters. A bunch of kids impatiently waiting for their turn being the safety net for the person on the trampoline. I guess when you think about it that wasn’t really a great safety net and the usually hard gym floor around the trampoline was the rest of the safety net. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) apparently made a statement in 1977 that started school committees selling off trampolines and canceling them as part of physical education curriculums due to what they said was too many spinal cord and neck injuries and not necessarily the interceding of insurance companies. A decade later the trampoline started making a comeback and in 1998 there were approximately 3 million backyard trampolines in use. This of course has increased the number of injuries associated with trampolines just by sheer volume of kids bouncing their way to happiness and physical fitness. This time insurance companies are getting involved and are making trampolines a target in their homeowner’s policies. Something to think about I guess, but I’m sick of insurance companies running our lives, but if it does come to the point of your insurance company canceling your homeowner’s policy, then you might either look for another insurance company or reevaluate your desire to buy a trampoline.

The trampolines offered in the advertisement seem well equipped for safety. Check them out, check out their safety ratings, calculate the good and bad of owning a trampoline, then potentially purchase one and have a great summer bouncing your way to great fitness and health if you do decide that a trampoline is the right thing for you and your family. Bottom line – make an informed decision.
